On Wednesday 28th January parents and staff from Changing Realities met with Shirley-Anne Somerville, the Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, David Wallace, the Chief Executive of Social Security Scotland and Gayle Devlin the Deputy Director of Disability Operations at Social Security Scotland.
We met at St Andrew’s House, a very beautiful and historic building in Edinburgh. The day got off to a good start with blue skies and sunshine.
I felt that the Scottish Government and Social Security Scotland were keen to hear what we had to say and were good listeners. They were interested to know more about what’s working, as well as where there are gaps and our thoughts for how these should be filled by Social Security Scotland. It seemed clear they want to design Social Security Scotland as one of the best systems, that is based on integrity and respect for those receiving benefits, not shame and stigma.
The intention behind those at the meeting was very good. We shared positive and negative feedback about Social Security Scotland and suggested further actions they can take to improve. We talked about this in relation to many of the Social Security Scotland benefits, including the Five Family Payments, Disability Benefits, and Carer Benefits.
As always the meeting felt short but I think we will meet again and have ongoing engagement with the Scottish Government and Social Security Scotland.
After the meeting, Changing Realities had a beautiful lunch. We ate a lot and had cake to finish the day. I had a great time and am so proud of our team. We are lucky to have such supportive staff – they are amazing at facilitating these meetings.
Thanks to all involved on both sides.
